ADULT'S JIU JITSU

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) has gained a lot of attention in recent years, and it’s obvious why. Made for the real world, BJJ is a form of self-defense that every person should master. BJJ focuses on ground level altercations – utilizing holds, throws, blows, and a variety of submission techniques. This makes jiu-jitsu ideal when learning how to take on an opponent who may be larger than you, without necessarily having to hurt them. Brazilian Jiu Jitu is a rewarding martial art. Unlike many other martial arts, it has no striking, instead mostly taking place on the ground and utilizing chokes, strangles and joint locks. Jiu Jitsu teaches you valuable self-defense skills, particularly how to restrain opponents, ground survival techniques, and submissions designed to render an opponent unconscious or immobilize their joints.

Fitness

With such a fast pace, you’ll be burning tons of calories while practicing Jiu Jitsu. While BJJ is likely to help you shed a few pounds, it’s going to make you a stronger athlete in every respect. Jiu Jitsu is known for increasing flexibility, building muscle mass, quickening reflexes, and improving coordination. If you’re a multi-sport athlete, Jiu Jitsu is about to become your best friend.

Grappling

While many martial art disciplines incorporate grappling here and there, when it comes to BJJ, grappling is at the core of all of your training. Not familiar with grappling? Here’s what you need to know – instead of utilizing weapons or striking, grappling is all about getting your opponent to concede through physical dominance. The rules and techniques of grappling vary depending on whether one is practicing Gi or No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, as well as whether it’s being done in a sport or self-defense style. When grappling in BJJ, you’ll spend most of your time fighting from the ground and will likely utilize many different types of chokes.

Self-Defense

Made for the real world, BJJ is a form of self-defense that every person should master. BJJ focuses on ground level altercations – utilizing holds, throws, blows, and a variety of submission techniques. This makes Jiu Jitsu ideal when learning how to take on an opponent who may be larger than you, without necessarily having to hurt them.

Regular sparring opportunities

BJJ is an interesting martial art because of the regular opportunities to spar and “test” your techniques and hypotheses against a resisting opponent. Most classes will include 15 – 30 minutes of sparring broken up into 5 minute rounds where you can spar with opponents of different weights and skill levels. This means you’re constantly going up against different people with different game styles and must constantly refine and change up your game.

Positive Environment

You’ll love BJJ because we love BJJ. At The Kickboxing Academy Harker Heights we are passionate about sharing the gift of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with our community. We aim to create an environment where every single student can accomplish their goals – whatever they may be. It doesn’t matter if you’ve spent your entire life training in MMA and are exploring your newest martial arts discipline or you’re just trying to break away from the monotony of the gym, we will exceed your expectations.

Competitions

There are numerous BJJ competitions held around the year in many countries, so you can measure your skills against others in a high intensity setting. These are run by different organizations, with the biggest arguably being the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). There are also other organizations which run competitions with  slightly different rulesets like Grappling IndustriesUAEJJF, NAGA, ADCC and SJJIF. Competition gives you an opportunity to test your jiu jitsu in an intense but safe way, and also allows you to see the differences between the Jiujitsu taught at your gym versus other gyms.

Ability to deal with pressure

One of the biggest lessons I learned when starting Jiu Jitsu was to relax, especially when in an unfavorable position where your first reaction might be to panic. Relaxing under pressure allows you to better conserve your energy and plan your next move. In a study of 42 male BJJ athletes from Norway, Øvretveit et al. wrote “Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners appear to focus on mastery, making them more likely to demonstrate adaptive behavior when facing adversity.”

Confidence Building

The Kickboxing Academy Harker Heights is dedicated to empowering you with the confidence and self-esteem needed to succeed in everyday life. Jiu Jitsu can bring out the positive qualities that have always been a part of you, whether that is inner calm, positive mental attitude, patience, or self-discipline. Jiu Jitsu training will help you overcome fear, anger, and self-doubt, and leave you feeling confident in any situation.

Community

From the moment anyone steps into our building, they will be met with a supportive and inclusive environment of instructors and fellow students who want them to succeed. Because students regularly spar with each other in class, you may be surprised to learn just how strong the friendships in our BJJ classes are. Jiu Jitsu teaches students the thrill of winning as well as the humility of losing, and we make sure our students respect each other throughout all the highs and lows of their training.
